yeah, I haven’t exactly been desperate to see the last two Scorceses but this one has me intrigued - think I’m gonna try and catch it in cinemas this week.
finally dipped my toe into Jia Zhangke this last week, starting with Ash is Purest White which I loved. have seen criticism of that film that it’s a bit of a greatest hits in terms of themes he’s already covered extensively in his career, but that was lost on me - i had a blast.
watched his 2000 film Platform after that, which I found a lot harder to engage with (obviously I’m pretty blind to a lot of the context in terms of 70s-90s China), but it was still really beautiful at points - if glacially slow. got Unknown Pleasures and Xiao Wu cued up next!
speaking of which, signed up to Criterion last week and very happy i did so.
